All the items of the user account mailbox including the emails are stored in the PST files. PST files are the centralized database of MS Outlook located at C:Documents and SettingsUser_idLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlookOutlook. pst. PST files are susceptible to corruption and the major causes of this the size limitation issue. If the PST file size exceeds 2 Gb (10 Gb for Outlook 2007 and 2010), corruption takes place and the emails stored in them become inaccessible. Other factors that could lead to PST corruption are header corruption, media corruption, software malfunction, virus attacks and improper system shutdown. MS Outlook comes with a pre-installed Inbox Repair Tool that can be used to repair the damaged PST files in such cases. However, Scanpst.exe is not very effective in resolving severe cases of corruption.
